If you’ve never heard of Pasquetta, get ready to hear about one of Italy’s most beloved spring traditions. Celebrated on the Monday after Easter, Pasquetta is a day when families and friends gather outdoors for picnics, barbecues, and nature outings – a chance to relax after the more formal Easter celebrations.
And where better to enjoy Pasquetta than on Lake Como? Between flower-filled villas, panoramic gardens, and spacious lakeside parks, the area offers the perfect setting for a day outside. But if you’re planning to be here, a bit of advance planning is essential—because you’re not the only one with this idea.
What is Pasquetta?
In the Christian tradition, Pasquetta, Easter Monday or Lunedì dell’Angelo, commemorates the moment when the angel appeared to the women at the tomb of the risen Christ, announcing that Jesus had resurrected. While the religious meaning remains, in Italy the day is now mostly celebrated as a joyful occasion to spend time outdoors with family and friends.
Traditionally, Italians head to the countryside, the mountains, or the Lake with baskets full of food and picnic blankets. Classic menus often include cold pasta salads, focaccia, grilled meats, and sweet leftovers from Easter lunch.
Of course, no conversation about Pasquetta would be complete without mentioning the long-running joke among Italians: it almost always rains. Despite the best-laid plans for barbecues and picnics, the weather on Easter Monday is notoriously unpredictable, so much so that it’s become part of the tradition itself. Locals often prepare a “plan B” just in case the clouds decide to crash the party.

Lake Como: the perfect destination
Pasquetta on Lake Como is about promenades and villas, many of which reopen in spring. From the blooming gardens of Villa Carlotta to the lakeside walkways of Villa Monastero, the atmosphere is relaxed, colorful, and full of seasonal energy.
Most importantly: book in advance. Unsurprisingly, Pasquetta is one of the busiest holidays of the season. Trains, ferries, restaurants, and villa tickets sell out quickly, especially when the weather is good. Pre-book villa entrance tickets and arrive early if you’re traveling by ferry or train.
Staying in one of Varenna Holidays’ properties also means you’re close to the action, without needing to worry about parking or long transfers. Many of our rentals are located just steps from the Lake and public transport.
