High above Varenna, perched on a hill that dominates the Lake, stands Castello di Vezio, with its history, legend, and rich natural surroundings. Visiting the castle is like stepping into another time, with stone walls and watchtowers that make this one of the most captivating spots on Lake Como.
The origins of Castello di Vezio go back to Roman times, but it was during the medieval period that the castle gained importance as a strategic defense point. Built around the 12th century, it served as a watchtower, controlling access to the Lake and the surrounding valleys. Its location was no coincidence: from its ramparts, you can see as far as Bellagio, Menaggio, and the Grigne mountains. It was the perfect lookout post in times of war and a place of power in times of peace!
The castle is also linked to the legend of Theodelinda, Queen of the Lombards, who is said to have lived here during the last years of her life. Some visitors claim to feel her presence, adding to the castle’s mysterious and magical atmosphere.
Today, the Castello di Vezio is open to visitors and highly appreciated for its special sculptures. Ghost-like figures placed around the castle grounds add a whimsical touch, making the visit (and photos) way more memorable.

An ideal day on Sentiero del Viandante
Vezio castle also happens to be a highlight along one of the most famous walking routes on Lake Como: the Sentiero del Viandante. This ancient path, once used by merchants and pilgrims, runs along the eastern shore of the Lake, connecting towns like Abbadia Lariana, Varenna, Bellano, and Colico.
Passing through the Vezio promontory, the trail offers hikers the chance to combine outdoor adventure with cultural discovery. The stretch between Varenna and Bellano, with a stop at Castello di Vezio, is particularly recommended as a day-trip.
Staying in Varenna puts the castle and the Sentiero del Viandante right at your doorstep. Many of Varenna Holidays’ rental homes are located within walking distance from the start of the trail and from the charming village of Vezio itself. You can start your morning with a leisurely breakfast overlooking the lake, head up to the castle for panoramic views and a touch of history, and continue along the Sentiero del Viandante for an afternoon immersed in nature.
The trail and the castle together represent one of the most original ways to experience Lake Como: slow and scenic, yet unexpected and often overlooked.
The Castello di Vezio is open seasonally, usually from March to November. You can count on Varenna Holidays for tips and booking!
