How to visit Lake Como from Milan using public transport: our tips

Visiting Lake Como from Milan is easy and convenient thanks to direct public transport connections. Whether you’re planning a day trip or an extended stay, here are the best ways to reach the Lake’s most famous destinations, including Como, Varenna, and Bellagio.

Option 1: Train from Milan to Como City

One of the fastest ways to reach Lake Como is by train from Milan to the city of Como. There are two main routes:

  • From Milano Centrale, take the train to Switzerland, which stops at Como San Giovanni, located a few steps away from the city center.
  • From Milano Cadorna, take the train to the waterfront station Como Lago, right in the heart of Como.

In Como, you can explore the city’s historic center, visit the Cathedral of Como, and take a leisurely stroll along the promenade. If you wish to visit other towns, you can take a bus from Como Lago station or a scenic but slower ferry ride.

Trains run frequently throughout the day. For the latest schedules, tickets, and prices, visit Trenord’s official page.

Option 2: Train from Milan to Varenna Esino

For a more direct route to Lake Como’s famous villages, take the train from Milano Centrale to Varenna Esino, one of the most romantic and photogenic towns on the Lake. This line passes through Lecco, and is ideal for travelers looking to explore the more picturesque side of the Lake or continue to destinations like the upper Lake or Valtellina region.

  • From Varenna: The easiest and fastest way to reach Bellagio is by ferry. The short ride across the Lake offers spectacular views and a seamless connection between these two charming towns.
  • From Como: If starting from Como, you can take either a scenic but lengthy ferry ride or a bus departing near Como Lago station.

Locals’ insights for making the most out of you Lake Como trip

Public ferries and boats are always an option to explore Lake Como’s villages. But keep in mind that travel times can be long, especially, when starting from the city of Como. If you want to save time, opt for the train to Varenna and take a short ferry ride from there. Or rent your private boat tour from there.

Choosing Varenna as your base not only saves time but also offers a more romantic and tranquil experience. This makes it the ideal hub for exploring Bellagio and other lakeside villages.

While taxis are available, especially in larger towns like Como and Lecco, it’s best to book in advance. This especially if you’re traveling to smaller villages or plan to use them during high tourist seasons.
Buses are useful for short connections but less reliable and often packed during the summer. Therefore, not the most comfortable way of travelling.
