What to pack for Lake Como in summer: local tips for a perfect stay

Planning a summer holiday on Lake Como? Between boat rides, hikes, lakeside dinners, and village strolls, it’s not always easy to know what to bring. The mix of outdoor adventures and cultural visits calls for a smart and practical packing list.

Here’s everything you need to know, straight from the locals.

Light clothes… and a jacket!

During the day, temperatures can get quite high, especially in July and early August, so pack light, breathable clothing. That said, don’t underestimate the evenings: even in summer, once the sun goes down, it can feel unexpectedly cool. If you’re planning dinner by the lake or an evening boat ride, be sure to bring a light jacket or a sweater.

Moreover, many of the Lake’s most beautiful sites are historical churches and chapels, which may require modest dress. It’s good etiquette (and often mandatory) to cover shoulders and knees when entering. A light shawl or scarf works perfectly too and takes up no space in your bag.

Remember to prioritise comfort over fashion! Cobblestone alleys, lakeside trails, and mountain paths are part of the experience. So swap those fancy shoes for a good pair of walking sneakers – your feet will thank you.

Yes to bathing in the Lake, but with caution

If you’re hoping to swim in the Lake, you can definitely do it! The water is clean, refreshing, and incredibly scenic. But be warned: the lakebed is often rocky, so a pair of water shoes will make your experience much more comfortable.

Swimming in Lake Como can be dangerous if you go too far from shore, as the depth drops quickly and currents are unpredictable. Stick close to the beach, and for children, we always recommend floatation aids or arm bands.

The sun can be intense, especially when you’re on a boat or walking along the reflecting surface of water. Make sure to pack: high-SPF sunscreen, a hat and UV-protection sunglasses. If you plan to explore the lake by boat, these are essential.

No need to over-pack: Varenna Holidays has you covered

If you’re staying in one of our Varenna Holidays homes, you don’t need to worry about towels or bed linens—they’re always provided. You’ll arrive to find everything you need for a comfortable stay, already in place.

While shops are never far away, you might want to pack or buy basic condiments (salt, olive oil) to settle in smoothly.

Want to avoid even that? Ask us about our Welcome Pack and additional services like crib and high-chair rentals for families. We’re here to make your stay as easy as possible.

On a more practical side

In Italy, all businesses are required by law to accept card payments. That said, we recommend carrying a bit of cash for small local markets, artisan stalls, or mountain restaurants that may not have POS systems.

Italy uses European plugs (type C and F, 220V). If you’re coming from outside Europe, pack a universal travel adapter to charge your devices with ease.

With Varenna Holidays, you can rely on local advice, thoughtful services, and homes equipped with everything you need to relax, explore, and experience the lake at its best. Need help planning your stay? Contact our team – we’re locals, and we’re here to help.
