Exploring Lake Como without a car is often the smartest choice. While the Lake is incredibly scenic, its narrow streets, limited parking, and small villages can make driving more of a headache than a help.
Public transportation around the lake is well-organized and, with a bit of planning, lets you move smoothly between towns and attractions, especially if you know what to expect in spring and summer, when crowds are at their peak!
Ferries: the scenic and stress-free option
The most enjoyable way to move around Lake Como is definitely by ferry. The means of transport becomes an experience in itself, offering spectacular views and a relaxing pace.
From Varenna, you can reach major destinations like Bellagio, Menaggio, Cadenabbia, and Tremezzo in just a few minutes. The ferry system also connects Como and Colico, with stops at dozens of picturesque lakeside towns.
How to use it well:
- Buy tickets online (on Navigazione Laghi) several days in advance, especially on weekends and holidays – boats can and do sell out.
- If online tickets are already sold out, don’t panic, you can still buy them in person at the ticket office near the dock, but arrive at least 20 – 30 minutes early and expect lines.
If you’re planning to explore all three shores of the lake, Bellagio is the most strategic point to include in your itinerary. Bellagio sits at the meeting point of the three lake branches and is easily reachable by ferry from nearly anywhere.
From Varenna, it’s a scenic 15-minute ferry ride. Being one of the ferry endpoints also makes it easier to find seats, even during peak season.
Buses: the most extensive coverage
The ASF bus network is the most capillary system for getting around Lake Como, covering both tourist towns and smaller villages. Routes connect towns along the Lake as well as inland locations, with good frequency during the day.
What to know:
- Onboard purchases are easily done with VISA contactless payments, while paying cash (directly to the driver) comes with a surcharge.
- Tickets can be also bought in advance from many bars or tabaccherie, while you can’t buy tickets online unless you have a registered ASF subscription.
- Schedules can vary and delays are not rare, but QR codes at stops let you check real-time updates, which are also synced with Google Maps.
Trains: perfect for the eastern shore
The Trenord train line that runs along the eastern shore (from Lecco to Colico) is one of the most efficient and scenic ways to travel without a car. Nearly every town (Varenna, Bellano, Dervio, Colico…) has its own station, just a short walk from the lakefront.
From Colico, the line continues into Valtellina, offering a great chance for a day trip into the mountains with no need for a car.
No compromise: bikes and private transfers
