Cycling Legends & Sacred Roads

Lake Como is known for its serene waters, colorful villages, and breathtaking mountain views — but for cyclists, it is also home to one of the most iconic monuments of cycling: the Giro di Lombardia and the Chiesa del Ghisallo

Whether you are a passionate cyclist or just an admirer of the sport, this corner of Italy offers a unique combination of athletic challenge, cultural heritage, and spectacular scenery.

Giro di Lombardia

Known as the “Classica delle Foglie Morte” (Classic of the Falling Leaves), the Giro di Lombardia is one of the five “Monuments” of professional cycling. Traditionally held in October, it marks the end of the European cycling season and attracts the world’s best riders.

The race route weaves around Lake Como, tackling some of the most challenging climbs in the region — none more famous than the Madonna del Ghisallo climb. Watching the peloton snake its way up narrow, winding roads lined with fans is an unforgettable experience for anyone visiting in the fall.

Climb to Madonna del Ghisallo

At the heart of this race lies one of cycling’s most sacred places: the Chiesa del Ghisallo, a small church perched on a hilltop overlooking the lake.

According to legend, the Virgin Mary appeared here to a traveler threatened by bandits, offering him protection. In 1949, Pope Pius XII declared the Madonna del Ghisallo the patron saint of cyclists, and since then, this chapel has become a pilgrimage site for cycling lovers worldwide.

Inside, the church is a treasure trove of cycling history. Its walls are lined with jerseys from legendary riders, bicycles used in historic races, and heartfelt dedications to cyclists past and present. The nearby Cycling Museum expands on this heritage with memorabilia, photos, and interactive exhibits.

Experiencing It Yourself

You don’t have to be a professional cyclist to enjoy the magic of this place.

  • By Bike: Rent a road bike in nearby towns like Bellagio or Varenna and try the climb yourself. The ascent to Ghisallo is challenging but manageable for recreational cyclists with some climbing experience.
  • By Car or E-Bike: Prefer a gentler approach? Take a scenic drive or rent an e-bike and enjoy the breathtaking views without breaking too much of a sweat.
  • Combine with Local Culture: Pair your visit with lunch at a mountain trattoria or explore nearby Bellagio for a perfect Lake Como Day trip.

Lake Como isn’t just a place to relax by the water — it’s a destination that celebrates passion, history, and adventure. The Giro di Lombardia and Chiesa del Ghisallo are perfect symbols of this spirit, combining physical challenge with cultural depth.

Whether you ride to the top or simply visit to soak up the atmosphere, this experience is sure to leave you inspired — and perhaps ready to plan your next ride.
