Lake Como in summer is stunning, but if it\u2019s your first time visiting, you might not know what to expect from its beaches. Unlike typical seaside destinations, here nature shapes the experience, and every shoreline is different. As locals, we\u2019ve put together a list of practical tips to help you enjoy your lake days to the fullest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stones, not sand! <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most beaches on Lake Como are made of pebbles and stones, not soft sand. This means: lying on the ground can be uncomfortable, so bring a thick towel or mat; entering the water barefoot may hurt, so water shoes are highly recommended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Limited beach facilities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many beaches around Lake Como are free and not equipped you won\u2019t always find sunbeds, umbrellas, or caf\u00e9s nearby. So come prepared<\/a> with everything you need (sunscreen, water, hat, change of clothes, and a snack).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beautiful, yes, but the lake is cold and deep<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even on the hottest summer days, Lake Como stays quite cold. Avoid swimming right after eating, and always enter the water slowly to let your body adjust. Keep very well in mind that Lake Como can be dangerous: in most areas, the lakebed drops steeply just a few meters from shore; there are underwater currents and small but strong whirlpools that can pull you under if you swim too far out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stay close to the shore and be extra careful if you’re not a strong swimmer. For children, it’s always a good idea to have arm floats or swim vests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strong sun, little shade<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even in the mountains the summer sun can be intense, particularly during midday hours. Make sure to bring high-SPF sunscreen, a light hat, and a full bottle of water. If possible, avoid sunbathing between 12:00 and 3:00 p.m., when the sun is at its peak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Respect nature (and local rules)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of Lake Como\u2019s beaches are surrounded by parks and natural green areas. They\u2019re scenic and well maintained, but that means you\u2019re expected to respect them. In many beaches you are going to have to follow very strict rules: no fires or barbecues; no wild camping; always take your trash with you and use the available bins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
